Better than Boston
"Y'all are better than the Boston Marathon."
It was last weekend. A runner told me this as he picked up his bib.
His full quote, "I registered at 9 PM last night, and you already have me in your system for race day check-in. Y'all are better than the Boston Marathon. If I ever organize a race, give me your name so I can call you."
The runner had registered late on race eve. Instead of frantic spreadsheet searching or paper forms, the runner’s info was easy to find in our system (and payment completed electronically) — so the runner was ready to be assigned a bib and receive a shirt.
Why do I bring this up? Because I’m a human who naturally likes to brag about complements people tell me.
Besides that, at Run The Day we like to grow together.
And as much as I’d like for all races to sell out months in advance, the reality is that many runners like to wait until the last minute to sign up.
For races that want to grow, a system that allows for smooth registrations until 5 minutes before the start of the event allows more registrants to be captured and improves the chance of achieving high growth.
Plus, if you make check-in the easiest 30 seconds of a runner's morning, they might just start comparing you to the most iconic race in the country.
