Getting together

Getting together

Getting together is a big part of being human. It's in our nature to connect and form a sense of togetherness. This is one reason the COVID pandemic was difficult - we could not connect in the same way at socially distanced events. Thankfully, in-person events are now rocking and rolling again.

Getting together often involves sitting, drinking and eating. There is nothing wrong with that. I like sitting, eating and drinking as well as the conversations that go along with these 3 things.

But getting together and moving our bodies just feels good. The human body is meant to move, just as we are meant to get together. Maybe it is for a workout, on a hike, while dancing, at a 5k or walking around the park. Getting together to move not only feels good, it also creates a different type of connection.

When I first talked to Tim, one of the things that surprised me about Run The Day is how the overwhelming majority of our runner community was NOT elite athletes. In fact, less than 6% of runners in Run The Day’s community race at a 7 minute mile pace or faster. A pie chart with the full breakdown is below.

The data demonstrates that yes, community races can be an opportunity to push ourselves to run fast, but the events that Run The Day supports are more about getting together as a community than preparing to win Olympic gold medals.

Let’s get together and move.

Tech Update: Do It Yourself Race Timing

Over the years, we’ve heard from many of Run The Day’s smaller races, “Hi, we love working with Run The Day, but our race is a community event that doesn’t have many serious runners. Since our race is about bringing the community together and raising money for a great cause, we’d prefer not to spend money on chip timing.”

We listened to your feedback and developed a DIY timing solution for races with less than 200 runners. Depending on distance, we still recommend that races with more than 200 runners chip time their event (read about the history of race timing).

We believe DIY Race Timing is a great option for small races that want to:

  • Save money

  • Simplify race day

  • Share live results

  • Streamline race day check-in

  • Fundraise

  • And more!
