Remembering loved ones

Remembering loved ones

Community races can be a great way to remember loved ones.

  • Maybe participants create teams and invite others to join them in raising money to honor a loved one.

  • Maybe your race is in memorial of a deeply loved community member.

  • Maybe the activity of running is something that race participants previously did with loved ones so evokes strong emotional memories.

  • Maybe the feeling of being outside, moving our bodies and challenging ourselves brings out the inner child in us that helps us remember those we love.

Regardless, organizing community races can be a great way to remember loved ones and preserve their legacy.

Directing races can feel like a thankless job at times, so consider this a big THANK YOU on behalf of our Run The Day family for all of your hard work in keeping the memories of loved ones in your community alive.

Have a great weekend!

The biggest hurdles of starting a community race and tips to overcome

Starting a race can feel overwhelming. Here are a few ideas to help you overcome the biggest obstacles of organizing a race for your community:

  • Obstacle: It’s not rocket science but there are a million little things

    • How to overcome: Give yourself plenty of time (at least 3-6 months) and recruit a race committee to help. Don’t be afraid to delegate tasks to others and set clear deadlines to stay organized.

  • Obstacle: Finding a location

    • How to overcome: Call nearby parks to ask if they offer a 5K course. Look up local race calendars (like Run The Day and Running in the USA) to see where recent and upcoming 5Ks are taking place for inspiration.

  • Obstacle: Recruiting sponsors

    • How to overcome: Reach out early and follow up so that potential sponsors have plenty of time to build the marketing expense into their budget.

  • Obstacle: Assembling a team of volunteers

  • Obstacle: Understanding the finances

  • Obstacle: Getting participants
