The Score Takes Care of Itself

This week, I started shaking off the Christmas cobwebs.

During the holiday hibernation, I read the late Bill Walsh’s book The Score Takes Care of Itself.

For those not familiar, Bill Walsh led the San Francisco 49ers to three Super Bowl championships during his 10 years as head coach in the 1980s.

The book was full of wisdom and a good reminder of how easy it is to stare at the scoreboard — whether we are watching a game, looking at our Instagram, obsessing over registration numbers for a race or checking our bank accounts.

Coach Walsh believed that instead of worrying about the score, we should relentlessly work to achieve a high standard of excellence. That is how he found peace — by letting the score take care of itself.

Eventbrite is a recognizable brand. Just not one that’s built for 5K races.

3 Ways to Assign Bibs

An alphabetically ordered board with bib assignments

  1. Static bib assignment: Bib numbers get assigned before race day by labeling bibs with runners’ names.

  2. Dynamic bib assignment: Bib numbers are assigned at check-in using a mobile app.

  3. Mail-out bibs: Bibs (and often shirts) are mailed in advance—most common with large marathons.
