As I walked to get coffee Tuesday afternoon, a 20 vehicle motorcade of motorcycles, police cars and black SUVs zoomed past. No doubt, somewhere in the motorcade was one of the presidential candidates heading to to the Constitution Center for that evening’s debate.

The debate received a lot of attention and created many headlines.

For all that it did, one thing it did not do is unite the people watching. In fact, it felt quite divisive. Maybe that is simply how a debate goes. Maybe the game of politics is played by presenting narratives that paint the opposing candidate to be so incompetent that only a fool would vote for them.

Still, I hope the country comes together following the election. Regardless of who wins, I hope our country unites. I believe that unity is important for any nation to be successful. Our founding fathers must have believed that too since they included united as the first word in our country’s name - the UNITED States of America.

One of the many things I like about community races is that they bring people together. At races, people don’t care about political parties, religion or race. Everyone supports one another. The events unite communities.

In an election year, and always, we could use more unifying events. Community races are a good way to do it.
